FIFA and CIES launch third International Masters course

Zürich, 10 December 2001 - FIFA and the International Center for Sports Studies (CIES) in Neuchâtel (Switzerland) have launched the third edition of the highly successful International Masters in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport.

The course is co-ordinated by the CIES research institute linked to the University of Neuchâtel, and is just one of several academic activities initiated by FIFA in its programme of co-operation with the CIES.

The International Masters project combines the expertise of three of Europe’s leading universities in the field – De Montfort University, Leicester (England), SDA Bocconi - Bocconi University Business School, Milan (Italy), and the University of Neuchâtel, Neuchâtel (Switzerland) – together with guest professors from a number of other universities and guest speakers including those leading figures from some of the world’s most important sporting federations, football clubs and European legal institutes.

“The environment of sport is evolving ever more rapidly in today’s society,” says FIFA General Secretary Michel Zen-Ruffinen. “Sports federations, companies and clubs need managers to provide answers and develop and demonstrate skills far beyond their traditional role. They need to be able to make quick and accurate decisions, be willing to take risks and be able to deal with various new and complex economic, social and legal problems. It’s no longer enough just to have a formal education, you need to have a genuine feeling for the sports market.”

Many of the students in the first edition of the International Master (2000-2001) are now employed, in various capacities, in some of the world’s most prestigious sporting companies, federations and clubs. The second edition students have just terminated the first module in England and will shortly be moving to Milan to continue their studies in management before completing the law module and creating a group project/dissertation in Neuchâtel.

Altogether, the two editions so far have involved 47 students of 23 different nationalities from all continents, making this a truly international course of study.

The deadline for applications for the third edition of the International Master is 28 March 2002. Interested parties should contact the CIES at the following address for a prospectus and application form or consult the information and download the application form from the CIES website.
