CONFÉDÉRATION AFRICAINE DE FOOTBALL

For the second time, following their win in 1991, Ghana carried off the title of U-17 World Champions. It was clear right from the start of the tournament that whoever wanted to win the FIFA/JVC trophy would have to find a way past Ghana. Their superiority was evident both in their skills and in their physical maturity. A positive feature of their play was that even when they were leading they never played for time but kept going with their positive football. But title-holders Nigeria were a bit of a disappointment. Not only their final placing but also their performance were below what was expected of this team. While they had some fine players in their ranks, the coach had not succeeded in moulding them into a unit. Guinea more or less lived up to expectations and achieved a big surprise with a win over Portugal. But they hadn't enough international experience or tactical maturity to achieve any more after that.
