Mexico was introduced to soccer in the late 19th century. Since then, it has been an important contributor to the international soccer community, creating and promoting competition among the many powerful clubs there.
The Federacion Mexicana de Futbol Asociacion was formed in 1927. The national team progressed rapidly in international play, attending the Olympics in 1928 and qualifying for the first World Cup in 1930. Mexico has advanced to the World Cup finals nine times since then. It was the first team to actually qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, beating Canada, 2-1, in Toronto on May 9, 1993.
Mexico has played host to the World Cup on two occasions - one in 1970 and again in 1986.
