The United States won the bid to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup, a first time honor for the nation. The United States Soccer Federation has been a member of FIFA since 1913 and is proud of the progress the country has made, particularly in the last three years.
The United States, whose soccer prominence has grown tremendously since 1988, has played in four World Cup tournaments. Its first was in Uruguay in 1930 and the other in 1950, before it went through a 40-year dry spell. Victory finally came when it qualified for the 1990 World Cup finals with a 1-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. Since then, the United States has performed well internationally, winning the 1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the 1992 U.S. Cup and taking second place in the 1993 Gold Cup.
The popularity of soccer has grown remarkably in the United States over the past 20 years. The quality of play has continued to improve to the point where the United States teams have begun to make their mark in the world arena. By winning the honor of hosting the 1994 FIFA World Cup, the United States automatically qualifies to compete in the finals.
