Health Care Issues

Amongst the FIFA delegation, there were only a few minor medical complaints during the tournament which were addressed by the LOC and FIFA doctors. Two participating teams made use of the possibility to substitute injured players during the course of the championship. One of the players sustained a knee injury, the other two a thumb fracture and an ankle injury respectively which did not allow them to continue to play. continue...

A fiercely contested clash of old friends and neighbors Canada and the United States fell the Americans’ way in front of 47,784 screaming supporters at the final of the inaugural FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship.  After a scoreless 90 minutes, US captain and standout Lindsay Tarpley struck 19 minutes into golden goal extra time to send the pre-tournament favourites into a well-earned frenzy.
 
The match began all tension and jangling nerves as the teams took turns feeling each other out.   With the ball trapped primarily in the middle of the park, the opening minutes were a test of strength as each side tried to stamp a physical authority on the proceedings.

BRAZIL 1:1 GERMANY 3:4 penalty shoot-out

The third-place match of the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship was always going to be an intriguing clash of styles as Brazil’s creators and German efficiency met for the second time in the competition.  And after 90 minutes of tantalizing football the sides couldn’t be separated, as Germany, on the strength of two fine saves from Miriam Elling, pulled off a penalty shoot-out win for a place on the podium.

In one last press conference before the kick-off of the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship final, FIFA president Joseph S. Blatter allowed his joy over the inaugural tournament’s categorical, mind-boggling success to pour forth.  “There are no more tickets available for the final,” commented the most important man in world football, adding an emphatic “Mama mia!”

FIFA Fair Play Award

The FIFA Fair Play Award will be presented to the team that shows the best record of good sportsmanship during the 26 matches of the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship.
 
Points will be given for the behaviour of the players on the field of play, as well as for the general attitude of the entire team delegation also off the field. Particular attention will be paid to the attitude of the players and officials to opponents, referees, officials and spectators.

A mesmerizing clash of Brazilian flair and Canadian economy fell the hosts' way in front of 37,194 screaming fans at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium.  The sides couldn't be separated after 120 minutes of torrid football, and it took a nervy penalty shootout to see the hosts into Sunday's final where they will meet heavyweights the United States.

Christine Sinclair nearly opened Canada's account on the end of a gleaming defensive mix-up early on.
