Preliminary Competition
4 or 5 teams to qualify

CONMEBOL will play their qualifying tournament as a league system on a home-and-away basis, in which each team plays 18 matches, for a total of 90 games.

The teams finishing in positions 1 to 4 will qualify directly for the final competition.

The team finishing in position 5 will compete in a home-and-away play-off against the winner of the OFC preliminary competition, the play-off winner qualifying for the final competition.
