Experiences at the FIFA U19 Women's World Championships Canada and Referee of the finals

By FIFA Referee,
Policewoman and Guyanese: Dianne Ferreira - James

On my arrival in Canada it was a challenge from the start. The weather condition was new to me, which I found very cold , coming out of the tropics. There I met 24 Referees from 21 Countries that speak various languages. On the 17th Aug we had the Cooper's Test, which all the Officials completed and passed. I emerged as winner, which was my 1st accomplishment. I remained in Edmonton along with 7 other Officials, with Mr Carlos Alarcon as Match Inspector.

I was appointed 2 matches in the 1st round being Nigeria vs Japan and Japan vs Denmark, also worked as 4th Official in Japan vs Canada and Quarter Finals Canada vs England. During my stay I have learnt a lot from the other Officials, especially FIFA Referee Canadian Sonia Denoncourt, who was part of the LOC . I also received moral support and guidance from long time friend, mentor and coach IAAF Instructor and Lecturer Dr Linda Blade. I was extremely impressed with the Organization of the Tournament, all matches were on time etc. Referees displayed a high level of knowledge of the game and ability to perform their duties with diligence.

My appointment for the Final USA vs Canada was the happiest moment in my life, coming from a Country that play little or no women's games, only men's. All my life I refereed men games at the highest level here with a few U20, U17 and U15 around the Caribbean. I 'm a dedicated, committed and hard worker. MY motto is Consistency, Fair Play and Game Flow. I was never exposed to such huge crowds before, but I remained focus, for I knew the Officials for the Finals had to carry the FIFA Flag, a high level of officiating will be expected from us. By god 's grace we were able to be successful. I put my trust and faith in the god , for he has guided me thru' life.

It was a joy to be part of the Tournament and happy that I was given the opportunity to work with such a well organized FIFA staff. I look forward to be appointed for many more FIFA Tournaments and will always gave of my best. My next goal is the Women's World Cup 2003 China.
