It was not to be the US girls this time; they failed to add another title to their impressive record of winning Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996 and the World Cup at home three years later. The Norwegians just edged them out - and no little share of the credit for their win in a great final must go to goalkeeper Bente Nordby.
It was back in August 1991 that Bente Nordby first stood between the posts for the Norwegian national team.

Olympic Facts & Figures for the final matches
3 This was only the third match decided by penalty shoot-outs in the history of the Olympic Games. The first was the 1988 semifinal played between Brazil and Germany in Seoul just twelve years ago: the South Americans advanced to the Gold Medal match beating the Europeans 3-2 after a 1-1 tie at the end of the extra-times. The second was this edition's quarter final match between USA and Japan, won by the North American team. A total of 33 matches required the extra-times: 2 were decided by the toss of the coin while the golden goal determined the winner in as many matches.
