PRAGUE, June 17 (Reuters) - The Czech Soccer Union (CMFS) has sacked its controversial boss Frantisek Chvalovsky, held in custody on fraud charges, and replaced him with his former deputy Jan Obst.
News agency CTK said delegates at Sunday's general meeting voted overwhelmingly to support Obst after a six-hour election fight. He had been the union's vice-chairman since 1990, almost the entire period since the end of Communism. Chvalovsky, who had led the union for a decade, suffered a huge blow when police charged him with abuse of loan money in February and put in custody in March. The charges relate to Chvalovsky's meat trading business.
He had refused to resign from his top football post, saying he was innocent. The case has not yet gone to court. Obst won when his main competitor, Pavel Mokry, conceded and took vice-chairmanship.
