Wanchope strike gives Costa Rica win over Jamaica

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica, June 20 (Reuters) - Striker Paolo Wanchope hit the winner as Costa Rica followed up Saturday's historic win over Mexico by beating Jamaica 2-1 in another World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.

The result left the Ticos with an excellent chance of qualifying for their first World Cup in 12 years while the Reggae Boyz' chances of a second successive appearance suffered a setback. Luis Marin put the home side ahead after four minutes from a corner but Jamaica replied quickly when Onandi Lowe equalised six minutes later.

Manchester City striker Wanchope hit the winner seven minutes before halftime to leave Costa Rica second in the final stage of the CONCACAF tournament, from which three teams qualify, with 10 points from five games. Although both teams are coached by Brazilians - Costa Rica by Alexandre Guimaraes and Jamaica by Clovis de Olveira - they displayed teams played with vastly contrasting styles. Costa Rica, who inflicted Mexico's first-ever defeat in a World Cup match at the Azteca stadium last weekend, played their usual quick-passing game while Jamaica employed a rough, physical approach.

Jamaica are fourth with five points, three behind third-placed Honduras, and have already dropped four precious home points. The United States lead the group on 13 points.
