JOHANNESBURG, June 26 (Reuters) - A digest of soccer stories from around the African continent in the last week:
UGANDA
An assistant referee had his jaw broken after being head-butted by a player in a Super League game on Saturday, Ugandan newspapers reported over the weekend. Fred Wanyama, who is a FIFA official, was taken to hospital after being attacked by Moses Muyindo of Mbarara during their match against Kampala City Council at Namboole, near the capital Kampala. Incensed Mbarara players chased referee Siraj Katano after he had awarded a penalty against them and Wanyama was attacked when he attempted to come to the aid of the referee, reports said. They added that the other assistant referee, Ronnie Kalema, was chased by Mbarara players at the end of the match in which three players were booked. Joint league leaders KCC won the match comfortably.
ALGERIA
Chabab Belouizdad secured a second successive Algerian championship last Thursday, beating USM El Harrach 2-1 to move seven points clear at the top of the standings with one match left to play. Second-placed JS Kabylie forfeited their match at USM Alger as political tension rose in Berber region of the north African country. Kabylie also withdrew from their final league match at the weekend, giving USM Alger second place and a berth in next year's Confederation of African Football (CAF) Cup. El Harrach and CS Constantine were relegated after their respective defeats. Both sides had been promoted the previous season.
EGYPT
Egyptian international Hazem Imam has returned to Zamalek, the African Cup Winners' Cup holders, in a US$400,000 move from Udinese in Italy. The 26-year-old midfielder joined the Serie A club after the 1996 African Nations Cup finals but played just 11 games in three seasons before being loaned to De Graafschaap in the Netherlands. He is the third major signing for the Cairo club in the last fortnight following the arrival of Ghanaian international Alexander Opuku from Germany and Zambian winger Freddie Mwila.
BENIN
Belgian Rene Taelman has been appointed as national coach of Benin, officials said on Monday. It is the second national team appointment in Africa in the last three years for Taelman, who was in charge of Burkina Faso at the 2000 African Nations Cup finals in Nigeria. He has also worked with clubs in the Ivory Coast and Morocco.
