PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, June 25 (Reuters) - Trinidad and Tobago's British-born coach Ian Porterfield was sacked on Monday following the country's dismal performance in the CONCACAF zone World Cup qualifiers.
Trinidad and Tobago have lost four of their five matches and drawn the other game, against Mexico, leaving them bottom of the six-team standings.
Porterfield had said last week that he had no intention of resigning as coach. A Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) statement said two members of the technical staff, assistant trainer Jimmy Blanc and assistant manager Neil Mollineau had quit. The TTFF also announced that Brazillian Rene Simoes, who guided Jamaica to the World Cup finals in France in 1998 and was recently appointed technical director of the country's football, would be the man in charge from this weekend.
Trinidad and Tobago continue their campaign on Saturday when they meet Jamaica at Port of Spain.
