LEEDS, England, Aug 1 (Reuters) - England striker Robbie Fowler faces up to eight weeks out following a hip operation, Leeds United said on Thursday.

Fowler, 27, has undergone surgery to shave a piece of cartilage from his hip after club doctors identified the long-standing problem.

Her first picked up the niggling injury towards the end of last season and was flown home from Leeds' tour of the Far East and Australia earlier this week after it flared up again.

A scan confirmed the diagnosis and Fowler, who cost Leeds 11 million pounds ($17.10 million) from Liverpool last November, is now expected to miss seven English premier league games at the start of the new campaign.

Fowler should be available again for the visit to Elland Road of champions Arsenal on September 28.
