Trimmed Israel squad of 20 leaves for Euro clash in Malta

JERUSALEM, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Israel left for Malta on Thursday with a trimmed squad of 20 to face the islanders in Saturday's Euro 2004 clash at Ta'Qali.

Coach Avraham Grant dropped four players from the provisional 24-man squad which he called up for training last weekend.

Maccabi Tel Aviv defender Gadi Brumer pulled out earlier in the week with an injury and Grant told defenders Abed Rabah (Hapoel Petah Tikva) and Ilan Bachar (Racing Santander) and striker Avi Tikva (Young Boys Berne) after Thursday's training they would not be travelling to the Mediterranean island.

Israel's match on Saturday is their only fixture in qualifying play for Euro 2004 in the coming week.

The team's home clash with Cyprus originally scheduled to be played in Tel Aviv on October 16 has been postponed until April 30, 2003 because Israel is prevented by UEFA from hosting matches due to the unstable security situation in the region.

Squad:
Goalkeepers: Dudu Awat (Maccabi Haifa), Liran Strauber (Maccabi Tel Aviv)

Defenders: Arik Benado, Adoram Keisi, Avishai Zano (Maccabi Haifa), Avi Strul (Maccabi Tel Aviv), Assi Domb, Yigal Antebi (Hapoel Tel Aviv).

Midfielders: Walid Badir, Michael Zandberg (Maccabi Haifa), Avi Nimni, Tal Banin (Maccabi Tel Aviv), Yossi Abuksis, Omri Afek (Hapoel Tel Aviv), Eyal Berkovic (Manchester City), Haim Revivo (Fenerbahce), Idan Tal (Rayo Vallecano), Yossi Benayoun (Racing Santander).

Strikers: Kfir Udi, Pini Balili (Hapoel Tel Aviv).
