Bulgaria wait on injured captain Balakov

SOFIA, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Injured Bulgaria captain Krassimir Balakov remains a doubt for Saturday's Euro 2004 qualifier against Croatia.

"No one can say whether he can play or not...until the day of the match," team doctor Mihail Iliev told a media conference on Thursday. "He is recovering slowly. We cannot expect miracles."

Playmaker Balakov, who has 87 caps and has scored 15 goals, injured stomach muscles during his club Stuttgart's 4-1 victory over TSV 1860 Munich in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Balakov said: "If my condition on Saturday is as it is now, I will not be able to play."

The match is a 43,500 sell-out at the renovated national Vassil Levski stadium after Bulgaria surprisingly beat Belgium 2-0 in their opening group eight qualifier last month.
