German football legend Fritz Walter has died
Fritz Walter, who captained West Germany to their first World Cup success in 1954, died on Monday aged 81, prompting an outpouring of heartfelt tributes. His club, Kaiserslautern, said their former captain had died peacefully in his sleep. 18 Jun 2002

Woman referee praised by all
A woman referee has never officiated at a FIFA World Cup™ match. However, a woman did recently referee a match at Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid – for the first time in the legendary stadium’s 55-year history. Carolina Domenech (pictured) – a FIFA referee for women’s matches since 1 January 2002 – officiated the game between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid and afterwards was showered with praise from all sides. Atletico and Argentina goalkeeper Germán Burgos was among those who applauded the 25-year-old Spaniard’s performance. “Her refereeing of the game was impeccable,” he said. 11 Jun 2002
