BERLIN, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Midfield strategist Michael Ballack, whose skills were a key factor in securing Germany's berth in the World Cup finals, says he dreams of donning the captain's armband for his country one day.
"I'd really like to prove my leadership qualities as captain. That kind of role gives you a lift and boosts your confidence," said Ballack, whose nickname among fans is the The Little Kaiser.
Ballack's scintillating displays in two playoff matches against Ukraine in November were central to getting Rudi Voeller's side through and a further sign of his progress in trying to match the Big Kaiser, Franz Beckenbauer.
He scored the equaliser in the first match in Kiev and then hit two more at home to lead Germany to a 4-1 win.
His performance did much to help him shake off his reputation as a gifted but somewhat erratic footballer, arrogant and more concerned about his good looks than breaking a sweat on a football pitch.
Ballack was the highest-scoring midfielder in the Bundesliga in the first half of the season with nine goals and his assured performances have been central in leading his club Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the league.
