Kahn overwhelming choice as German player of year

BERLIN, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, hero of his team's Champions League triumph, was voted German Footballer of the Year by sports writers for the second year in a row on Wednesday.

Kicker magazine named Kahn the overwhelming choice with 817 votes - well clear of the league's top scorer last season, Schalke 04's Ebbe Sand, who was second with 64 points.

Kahn, 32, made three saves in the penalty shootout that sealed his side's victory over Valencia in the Champions League final.

In June, Kahn was named German player of the season in another poll - a vote by the captains of the 18 Bundesliga clubs.

Bayern trainer Ottmar Hitzfeld said: "He had a sensational season and was an excellent role model for youths across the country."
