Morocco strengthen squad for African Nations Cup game

© Reuters 2002

RABAT, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Morocco have brought back a strong contingent of foreign-based players for next weekend's African Nations Cup qualifier against Equatorial Guinea after leaving most of them out of the team that beat Niger 6-1 in a friendly last Thursday.

Coach Badou Zaki named a 23-man squad on Sunday for the match in Rabat on October 12 against the Guineans, who have won only one full international game in their history.

Despite an easy victory being predicted for the home side in the group seven qualifier, Zaki named 15 foreign-based players in the squad.

Captain Noureddine Naybet of Deportivo La Coruna and PSV Eindhoven's Adil Ramzi return to the side after missing last week's friendly because they were playing for their clubs in the UEFA Champions League.

Italian-based defender Abdelilah Saber, who captained the side against Niger in his first game for Morocco in 18 months, retains his place.

Squad:
Goalkeepers: Abdelilah Bagui (Maghreb Fes), Abderrafiq Gassi (Royal Armed Forces), Tarek Jamouni (Wydad Casablanca)

Defenders: Tarek Chihab (FC Zurich), Talal El Karkouri (Paris St Germain), Noureddine Naybet (Deportivo La Coruna), Abdeslam Ouaddou (Fulham), Abdelilah Saber (Napoli)

Midfielders: Ali Bouab (Royal Armed Forces), Youssef Chippo (Coventry City), Abderrahim Chklit (Maghreb Fes), Othmane El Assas (Al Charika), Noureddine Kacimi (Raja Casablanca), Abdelkrim Kissi (FC Rubin Kazan), Adil Ramzi (PSV Eindhoven), Walid Regragui (Ajaccio), Youssef Safri (Coventry City)

Strikers: Hicham Aboucherouane (Raja Casablanca), Mustapha Bidoudane (FUS Rabat), Mourad Hdioued (Litex Lovech), Badr Kadouri (Dinamo Kyiv), Rabii Lafoui (Al Ahi), Rachid Rokki (Al Taaoune).
